Steroids not effective for chest infections in adults who dont have asthma or other chronic lung disease
If, however, you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you should discuss it with your doctor before having a steroid injection. Most research concludes that steroid injections take between 3-5 days to work. However to be on the safe side we would normally encourage patients to have their injection ideally 7-10 days week before their event.

Keeping the card with you will help any other doctor who treats you to manage your care correctly. You won’t be able to have steroid creams or gels if you have an infection that affects your skin.

Your steroid emergency card
People are often concerned about the possibility of other steroid-related side effects such as weight gain. One of the advantages of steroid injections compared to tablets is that often the dose can be kept low. This means that these other side effects are very rare unless injections are given frequently, more than a few times per year.
Before you start the medicine
Read and listen to personal stories from people who have been affected by lymphoma. If you notice any changes in your vision, ask your GP or optometrist (optician) for an eye health check.
Please ensure they are given plenty of notice to arrange any repeat prescriptions. If you run out of steroids you must inform your GP immediately as you should not stop taking your steroids suddenly. Your GP will have been sent a copy of your discharge summary, including the list of medication you were prescribed on discharge from hospital. They will continue to prescribe all your medication, so please ensure you inform them if you need any repeat prescriptions.
Steroids rapidly reduce children’s croup symptoms and shorten hospital stays
Serious health problems are more likely the longer you take steroids and the bigger the dose. Users can experience mood changes, irritability and aggression (‘roid rage’). Coming off steroids can lead to depression and for some men possibly thoughts of suicide. Steroids come as pills or a liquid that’s injected into a muscle.
Your immune system produces extra fluid to fight infections or bacteria, which causes swelling, redness and heat in the affected area. You might have noticed this if you have had a cut or wound on your skin. Steroids may be prescribed if there is evidence of swelling in the brain caused by a brain tumour.
